t has now been twenty years since Primavera Sound started to build its unflinching commitment to live music with Barcelona as the epicentre of an event that is international, multidisciplinary and can be enjoyed all year round.
It is a universe in itself that revolves around the unique character of Primavera Sound Barcelona, which reaches its twentieth anniversary in 2020. From its first steps as a one-day event in the Poble Espanyol to its current status as a global event that turns the Parc del Fòrum into the capital of music for five days, it has been the musical chronicler of its time and place with inimitable lineups. Pulp, The White Stripes, Sonic Youth, Mogwai, Belle & Sebastian, Pixies, PJ Harvey, Primal Scream, Wilco, Lou Reed, Motörhead, Patti Smith, Public Enemy, Portishead, Pavement, Cat Power, Vampire Weekend, Neil Young, Pavement, The xx, Sufjan Stevens, Pet Shop Boys, Jeff Mangum, The Cure, A$AP Rocky, Blur, The Postal Service, Marianne Faithfull, Tame Impala, Arcade Fire, Nine Inch Nails, Kendrick Lamar, The Strokes, The Replacements, Tyler, The Creator, Radiohead, Wu-Tang Clan, LCD Soundsystem, Brian Wilson, Bon Iver, Arctic Monkeys, Lorde, Björk, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Erykah Badu, Rosalía, J Balvin, Solange and Janelle Monáe are just some of the names that have marked the history of a festival that is now heading towards its twentieth edition.
In parallel to the main Barcelona event, Primavera Pro has also developed, an international meeting aimed at professionals from the music industry that since its first edition in 2010 has become a reference for the sector. Its programme comprises; talks, conferences and workshops that take place during the Day Pro Conference in the CCCB and concerts that take place both in the CCCB itself and on its own stage (Night Pro) on the Parc del Fòrum site.
Also, NOS Primavera Sound, the festival’s Portuguese counterpart, takes place in Porto one week after Primavera Sound Barcelona. Over the last eight years, since 2012 it has been extending the spirit of the festival whilst consolidating itself as an important event on the European circuit. Artists such as Kendrick Lamar, Sigur Rós, Patti Smith, Blur, Daniel Johnston, Rosalía, A$AP Rocky and Lorde, among others have already performed in the Parque de Cidade site in the Portuguese city.
The Primavera Sound identity will cross the Atlantic in 2020 with the birth of Primavera Sound Los Angeles, that will hold its first event in September 19th and 20th in the State Historic Park promising to bring everything to the American continent that has made the festival a unique world event.
Primavera Sound is not only about outdoor festivals. It is also behind other indoor formats such as Primavera Club, the autumn version that spreads into the venues of Barcelona and Madrid with its commitment to the up-and-coming talents, and Primavera Weekender, a meeting that brought together artist and fans, as never before, at its first edition celebrated in Benidorm in November 2019 with concerts by Primal Scream, Belle & Sebastian, Idles and Weyes Blood.
These are two examples that demonstrate that Primavera Sound is active all year round. Something that also happens thanks to Primavera Tours, that allow audiences to see some of the artists of the moment in the more intimate setting of a venue. Explosions in the Sky, Deerhunter, The xx, James Blake, Mac DeMarco, Tame Impala, David Byrne & St. Vincent, Beach House, Billie Eilish, Nils Frahm, Sufjan Stevens, Spiritualized, Father John Misty, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, Cigarettes After Sex, Skepta and Dead Can Dance, among many others, form part of the Primavera Tours history.
El Segell del Primavera, now renamed Primavera Labels joined the already multidisciplinary repertoire of Primavera Sound in 2013, as a new venture into the world of record labels. It is already home to around thirty artists and connects to the character of the festival and has some of the most interesting musical personalities on the national scene on its roster.
Also since the end of 2018, Primavera Sound can be listened to 24/7 all around the world via Radio Primavera Sound, the festival’s official online radio station. It is a window onto Primavera Sound and onto everything that is going on at any time, anywhere thanks to the broadcast in Spanish and English of a musical and extra-musical programming with the Primavera hallmark.
